Overview

Munchkin is an excellent game that combines challenging game play with an excellent sense of humor. It is on the few games that I have found that is fast to set up, challenging every time, and does not leave me feeling like I've wasted my time. In fact, my group has even put together a set of Munchkin house rules and custom cards to make the game even more fun.

House Rules

  • Death - In addition to the usual rules for death, lose two levels. Epic munchkins lose three.
  • Kneepads of Allure - The knee pads of allure are a single use item. Once you've used them, they must be discarded.
  • Epic Orc - An epic Orc cannot win by eating a level one monster. This rule is in place because it ruins the game to have an instant win like this. Instead, when hit with a curse, an Epic Orc can choose to lose a level and transfer the curse to a player of his choice.
  • Epic Dwarf - The epic dwarf is unbalanced. Instead of having any number of cards in his hand, the house rule is that an epic dwarf may have a number of cards equal to his level.
  • Rooms - Rooms are poorly implemented. We patched this by allowing any players to throw as many monsters into a room as they wish, without needing a wandering monster card to do it.
  • Epic Race/Class Change - At epic levels, you can no longer change race or class with impunity. Instead there is a one level penalty for such voluntary changes.
  • Divine Intervention - The divine intervention win for Clerics can be trumped by the Goes to Eleven card, even if that card is played after the Divine Intervention card.

New Cards

  • Accountant of Monte Cristo (monster)
    • Level: 15
    • Description:
    • Bad Stuff: Addition Error. Roll a die and give that many of your levels to the players of your choice.
  • Squidified (monster modifier)
    • Description: Turns any monster into a squid.
  • Chocolate Covered (monster modifier)
    • Description: Yummy! -5 to monster level when fighting a Halfling.
  • Hollow (monster modifier)
    • Description: -5 to monster level.
  • Tar Covered (monster modifier)
    • Description: Any weapons used in combat stay with the monster when combat is over, whether or not monster is defeated.
  • Socialism (curse)
    • Description: All players must have the same value of items in play. Trade until this is the case.
  • Necrophilia (curse)
    • Description: Player must attempt to join any combat involving undead.
  • Snark (monster)
    • Level: 5 or 15
    • Description: Some Snarks are Boojums. After joining combat roll a die. On a 5 or 6, the Snark is a Boojum and is a 15th level monster.
    • Bad Stuff: Softly and suddenly vanish away. Die.
  • Thimble Fork (weapon)
    • Description: +1 weapon. +5 when fighting a Snark or Boojum.

  • Burning (weapon modifier)
    • Description: +2 to weapon. Converts a weapon to a flame weapon.
  • Polymorphing Backpack (curse)
    • Description: At the end of every turn, roll a die. On a 6, the curse is lifted. Otherwise, the player on your left chooses a card from your hand to be zapped. Replace that card with the top card from the treasure deck.
